YUREI — Japanese Spirit Lore
TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SPIRIT LORE

Spirits
That Never
Truly Leave.

Literally derived from the words (faint/dim) and rei (soul/spirit). Yūrei cross back over the boundary into the physical world due to unresolved emotional ties.

From Reikon
to Yūrei

In Japanese belief, every human possesses a soul called Reikon.

A soul that passes away peacefully and receives proper funerary rites becomes a guardian spirit for the family.

However, a sudden or tragic death, an improper burial, or intense emotions—vengeance, deep love, profound grief—transform the Reikon into a wandering Yūrei.
